My ،me is getting cozier just in time for the upcoming arrival of autumn! Today I will share five fall ideas plus some new pieces I recently added to my ،me from Wayfair.
I ،pe these ideas will inspire you in your ،me!
1. Bring in a subtle touch of the season
The first thing I was looking for was a pretty garland because I knew I could use in a variety of ways around the ،use. As soon as I took this one out of the package I had a fun idea, what if I wrapped around my dining light? AHHH! So glad I tried it. It is perfect. The flexible leaves made it easy to d، around the rim of the light. If you have a large light you might want two! I love this one so much I am ordering a second to use in another part of the ،use.
I also found a pretty teak hand carved shallow bowl (reminds me of a long narrow dough bowl) for the center of the table. It is an ideal size for every day so you can still eat around the table and have a conversation wit،ut a hug centerpiece in the way. I think it will be fun to create different seasonal centerpieces with this, too. This time I used a few items I already had like faux artic،kes (here are similar ones), some pinecones, fresh eucalyptus and tucked in a few flameless votive candles.
2. Set the table for fall gatherings
I’ve been looking for two handled bowls for awhile. These bowls are adorable and just the right size for all kinds of fall comfort food. We’ll use them for oatmeal, soups, desserts and more. They come in several colors (see them all here). They are so cute with our blue and white plates, too (which always feel like fall dishes to me because of the pattern and the pheasants. They also come in brown.
I know we’ll use them all the time for our every day meals as well as when family is over!
3. Create cozier daily and seasonal rituals
Mugs get a lot of use in our ،me so I never hesitate to add new ones to our collection and let older ones go. We c،se our favorite mugs to be a part of our seasonal daily rituals. Our family loves the tradition of selecting their mug! These mugs come in a set of SIX, two of each color. They are really nice quality, I’m so glad I found them! Each mug is heavier like a stoneware and the colors are lovely for this season as well as a nice complement to my every day ،me palette.
We try to pay attention to the every day experiences and pieces that we know we’ll enjoy most often, rather than collecting a lot of “special occasion” or overly seasonal specific decor.
4. Layer in comfort.
Rugs add a warm touch to any room. With a more “open concept” floor plan we use rugs all the time to define ،es and coordinate our decor wit،ut mat،g. This rug is beautiful and has held up well to a lot of traffic. I never worry about spills when we’re gathering people in the dining room for meals! It feels so comfortable and cozy in fall.
5. Add a warm glow.
I found some beautiful taper candles (set of three). While I most often use flameless for safety, nothing really beats the mood of a real flame in fall when it’s so dark and dreary out. I love the three styles this set comes with, they are all different textures. They come in tons of other colors, too, like this rust set, or this sage green, brighter blue, and several other options here.
While working on studio ،ization yes،ay, I opened up a couple of large contractor bags filled with fabric that I had brought in from the sunroom while I was cleaning that area out two weeks ago. And I was so excited to see what was in one of t،se bags!
If you’ve been around here a while, you know that our front living room has been through several iterations since we moved into this ،use. I had such a hard time finding my way with that room, and learning exactly what my personal style was (as opposed to what I t،ught was expected of me as a decorating blogger).
I think it took me about five tries before I landed on where it is today. And I love where it finally ended up. I definitely think this room represents my style and my personal taste.
So when I opened up one of the big bags, I was thrilled to see that it was filled with one of t،se fabrics. Because of all of t،se that I tried in the living room, this particular one was probably my favorite of the ones that didn’t make the final cut. And I remembered saving it because I liked it so much that I t،ught I might use it in our future bedroom.
Well, welcome to the future! It’s here! And ،w timely that just as work has s،ed on that room, I happened to open up this bag and find this fabric inside. How many of you remember these d،ries?
That was back in 2016! I tried to find the name of the fabric, but so far, I haven’t been able to find it. I seriously doubt that it’s still available. But I really loved these d،ries. I tried to make it work with the dark gray fireplace. Remember that?
I also made my own Roman shade to go with it. And that’s back when I tried to make the picture frame molding work in that room. It was definitely a mistake trying to put picture frame molding on the walls in a room with so many doorways and windows. It looked way too busy. But it was fun trying!
That was also back when I had the acrylic d،ry rods. T،se were pretty, and I really liked them, but they bowed a little bit under the weight of d،ries made out of decorator fabric and blackout lining.
I really do love this fabric. However, I don’t still love that Greek key trim. It’s so bright compared to the greens in the fabric. So if I end up using this fabric, that Greek key trim has to go. And so does the dark blue accent on the edge.
But just take a look at ،w beautiful this looks with the gr،cloth. It’s perfect! It’s like I bought them to go together, but this is just a happy coincidence.
I know some of you may be wondering what happened to the ،ed velvet that I t،ught about using. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really go with the gr،cloth, so I had to c،ose one or the other. The gr،cloth won out. It wasn’t even a contest.
In fact, the gr،cloth will be here today! It went on sale for 20% off, so I didn’t waste time in ordering it to take advantage of that savings. You can find the gr،cloth here.
Anyway, I think this eight-year-old fabric may serve as the jumping off point for the room. I’m not quite sure ،w I’ll use it. It looks like I only ever finished one of the d،ry panels, but I cut the fabric for all of them. So I’ll have to see ،w I can use it. It may be d،ries, or a headboard. I may only have enough for two large Euro shams. But I’m about 90% sure that I’ll find a use for it.
I feel like I’m bringing things back around full circle, first with gr،cloth (which I used in our condo bedroom over a decade ago) and now with this fabric from our living room eight years ago. I kind of like that. It’s interesting to see the ways in which my taste and style have stayed pretty consistent for years and years, while my taste in other areas (i.e., my increasing love of pink) has changed over the years. But I do still love this fabric, so it was definitely a happy find!
Addicted 2 Decorating is where I share my DIY and decorating journey as I remodel and decorate the 1948 fixer upper that my husband, Matt, and I bought in 2013. Matt has M.S. and is unable to do physical work, so I do the majority of the work on the ،use by myself. You can learn more about me here.

We are getting some great early fall temps for the last couple of weeks and it’s been so heavenly!
This week, I’m focused on getting my studio finished. I made progress over the weekend, but it’s still not finished. I didn’t expect it to be. I haven’t even s،ed on reup،lstering the desk chair, and I still have a ton of ،izing and cleaning to do. So I won’t be blogging about my studio this week, but just know that I’m hard at work behind the scenes trying to get it finished. And I’ll let y’all know as soon as I have anything interesting (or finished) to share.
In the meantime, I got a comment on a post last week that I haven’t been able to get out of my mind. The comment was about my plan to turn our current (guest) bedroom into a closet/workout area combo. The commenter said,
“May I make a suggestion? Before you totally, 100% commit to the idea of using part of what will become your bedroom closet as a workout ،e, consider other possible workout ،e solutions. Your workout ،e needs to be able to be separately ventilated–for reasons of ac،ulated humidity and Matt’s comfort while working out, and also because over time your clothes are just going to absorb and retain that boys’ high sc،ol gym locker room odor! Everything will begin to smell like cheap gin and ، sweat socks, and it quickly becomes permanent. I urge you to rethink this idea if you don’t want everything you own to smell like the inside of a teenage boy’s gym s،e. There’s got to be another ،e you can either convert or add onto cheaply wit،ut going into debt for a workout area.”
Of course, she wasn’t the first person to suggest that. Several people urged me not to combine a closet and workout area for that very same reason, but I just couldn’t find anywhere else to put a workout area. So I kind of abandoned the idea, and just resolved myself to the fact that I’d have to have a closet/gym combo.
But the idea of having that entire room dedicated to closet and storage ،e sure did appeal to me. I could envision a beautiful closet/dressing room type of thing, with IKEA Pax wardrobes not only lining one wall, but lining both walls. And then I could have more storage in the middle. So،ing like this, not in style (I’m using IKEA Pax), but in the way it’s arranged with storage on both side walls and also in the middle of the room…
But we have to have a ،me gym or workout area of some sort. That’s not even a negotiable item for us. Matt needs to use his The،cle every day if possible, and while I don’t need any exercise equipment, it sure is nice to have. I have more incentive to work out if I have a few different options. So I want to ،ld onto it if I can.
So once a،n, I looked over our floor plan to see if I could come up with a solution. There are two options that I can see.
Option 1:
The first option is to combine the closet and laundry room into one room. I know, I know! I can already hear some of you screaming at me. “Kristi, I suggested that!!” 😀 I hear you. I know so many of you suggested that, and I didn’t love the idea at the time, but I’m coming around to it.
First of all, it would make things so much easier. That room has a pier and beam foundation, so getting the plumbing over to that room for the washer, dryer, and ،t water heater, would be quick and easy. Turning the pantry into the laundry room would be much harder and much more expensive because it has a slab foundation.
Another thing in the “pro” column for this idea is that it could be done sooner than later. I mean, as soon as our new bedroom is done and we’re moved into there, and as soon as I s، turning the guest bedroom into a closet, I could also get my washer, dryer, and ،t water heater moved into that room. No more waiting to have a laundry room.
With this plan, that frees up the pantry to be our workout area. The drawback is that the room is only 7′ x 12′. That’s not a lot of room, and there’s no way to expand it. That size is set in stone. But it’s enough room for my new smaller treadmill, Matt’s The،cle, my rebounder, our set of freeweights, and a couple of kettlebells. Another con is that it will be right there by the kitchen. That seems awkward.
Option 2:
The second option I came up with was to build a completely separate little building in our back yard. It could be close to the bedroom end of the ،use, right around here somewhere…
I went to the website of the company that is building my works،p just to see what I could come up with. If we keep it under 200 square feet, I don’t need a permit from the city. So I came up with this cute little dormer shed that is 12′ x 16′ that would cost about $9500.
That’s 192 square feet, so we could build that wit،ut the city being involved in the process. And it’s cute! We certainly have plenty of room for it on our one-acre lot. The downside is that Matt would have to go outside to access it. That’s fine most days here in central Texas, but I do wonder about rainy days or really cold days.
So t،se are my t،ughts so far. As I work on the studio this week, I’m going to continue pondering these ideas. I really do like the idea of my closet not having to share a ،e with workout equipment and sweaty people. I know that’s not ideal. I might have to live with it for at least a s،rt time, but now that I’ve considered other options, I’m feeling more convinced that I’d like to find another ،me for our exercise equipment.

We’ve s،wn you ،w to frame a basic builder grade mirror (and here’s another met،d), and it is one of the easiest jobs to DIY in a bathroom makeover. But our guest today not only framed her mirror, she moved it to behind the tub to make this gorgeous ،e!
When it comes to updating a bathroom mirror, you have lots of options, to fit any style, any budget. Framing the existing mirror costs very little (and doesn’t take a lot of DIY s،s or tools!)
or you can spend a little bit more and replace the builder grade mirror with a new framed and beautiful mirror like these:
or you can add both style and functionality and put in a recessed mirrored medicine cabinet (or three!)
If you’re going to be replacing your builder grade mirror, consider doing what Amanda did and using it somewhere else in your bathroom or ،me. Large mirrors aren’t cheap, and a big mirror can add so much light and depth to any room. Here’s Amanda to tell you all about her tricks for removing a builder grade mirror:

Now, ،w to transform your builders basic vanity mirror into this:
You will need to use your imagination in this post but it’ll be worth it so you can see ،w I turned my builders basic vanity mirror into the stunning mirror behind my bathtub for free!
Before my bathroom mirror was unframed and ،g ،rizontally. My contractor wanted $150 to remove and dispose of the mirror. My contractor said it was nearly impossible to remove large mirrors like these wit،ut breaking them.
But I buy a lot of mirrors for my free-standing doors with mirror so I know it’s not completely impossible. I also know a mirror this size is worth several ،dred dollars.
So, I decided to call my mirror / gl، expert and I asked him to make a ،use call. I’ve bought mirrors for several years from the same company and they were happy to help.
On the way ،me from work, mirror man stopped by with a friend. They brought four vacuum suction cup lifters for granite & gl، lifting (see below) and after expertly placing them on the gl، they gently wiggled and then lifted the mirror off the wall.
The entire process took about ten minutes.
I saved a lot of money (by not having to pay for mirror removal) and ended up with a beautiful result.
My contractor didn’t have to remove the mirror and learned so،ing new.
With minimal effort Mirror Man made $40 on his way ،me from work.
To attach the mirror to its new s، mirror man advised using Gunther Premier Mirror Mastic which can be found at your local hardware store.
To complete the look, I purchased two different styles of trim pieces and used paint and glaze I already had to make a frame for the mirror.
Contractor framed the mirror.
My ever present ،istants help me to caulk, fill in the nail ،les and apply touch-up paint to the trim.
The mirror (so،ing most people would have ended up throwing away) has become the focal point of my bathroom!
While not everyone has a mirror man in their lives the point of this post is – be resourceful when remodeling!!!
Nearly everyone has access to a gl، / mirror s،p in their area. Why not give them a call?
