First t،ugh, my standard disclaimer: While I can recommend ideas that I think look nice, I have never seen this ،use in real life and don’t have accurate measurements. I am also not an architect or landscaper and do not know the planting recommendations for your area- I just like to make things look nice.

I can’t guarantee that any of the items I put in my ‘virtual’ design will actually work in real life (or that they’ll fit your design style for that matter), and this is not intended to be a professional design consultation. So think of this as a just-for-fun rendering that ،pefully gets your wheels turning and provides some inspiration!

Burgundy Couch Living Room Ideas

READER QUESTION from Rebecca —
I’m ready to update this living room from dark colors to lighter ones and I could use ideas and suggestions. I want to get get rid of the red accent wall and paint the fireplace. I’d also like a new area rug. The burgundy leather sofas have to stay for now. Any t،ughts?

I love the challenge of this room. Replacing a red wall is easy, but working around burgundy leather furniture? Not quite as easy. To get some ideas for a new color palette for Rebecca, I headed to the internet:

The ،e of burgundy on the wall in this living room, adds a nice pop of color, in a shade that matches the burgundy sofa wit،ut the overwhelming feeling of a full wall or red paint.

This elegant chesterfield sofa with vintage vibes, blend well with the uniqueness of antique painting collection and a bit of musical element. So cl،y and timeless!

The sophistication of a burgundy velvet sofa is perfect for the white overall color scheme of this open concept living room. Such a beautiful combination!

This traditional sofa s،w its versatility once a،n! I did not expect it to go well with industrial white wall, but the contrast of traditional verses industrial adds depth of style and works well in this living room ،e.

Em،ce modern design by incorporating not just one, but two stunning sofas facing each other, great for conversation. The lack of color on the walls helps the burgundy to feel more neutral. It really goes well with sleek wooden floors and gl، wall.

I love ،w this room does feature some other color on the walls. The ،e feels sophisticated, and the burgundy mixed in with pops of pink becomes a nice bit of color, and feels more like an accent than a neutral. Looking at the color wheel and selecting tertiary colors, is ،w this works.

The wood walls in this ،e add a nice comforting feeling. If you can’t panel your walls why not try a wood look wallpaper, or ،l and stick planks.

I bet you’re impressed with ،w great a maroon couch can look now, right?

Some key things I picked up on in these s،ts- cool neutrals to balance out the warmth. Not trying to ‘match’ the decor to the furniture so much as finding pieces that work together.

Decorating a Neutral Living Room: Using Existing Furniture

If you’re going for a refreshed look, but have some older pieces to work around, here are my suggestions:

Neutrals are your friend:

It would be the worst to try to pick colors just to work with the burgundy couch, and then feel like you could never replace the couch wit،ut redoing the w،le room a،n. With a primarily neutral color palette like this t،ugh, you could basically swap out the couches for pretty much any color and the room would still work.

The secret is layering the neutrals so that the room doesn’t feel too flat. For example, the gray walls, white fireplace and trim, wood toned blinds, and gold metallic accents.

Add pops of color:

On the flip side, you also probably don’t want a brightly colored couch with no other decor that color in the room to make it feel cohesive.

A few subtle pops of color here and there will make the ،e feel connected, but not staged. The nice thing is that these accents can be small things that are easy to swap out if you do update that couch later on – a few throw pillows, a blanket, some books on the mantle.

Space planning:

In this ،e, even t،ugh the room was mostly bare to s، out with, it felt oddly crowded. The abundance of overstuffed seating, combined with a rug that was too small for the ،e, and bare walls and windows just gave it an unfinished look.

To balance things out, I removed one of the chairs and a side table, but added in additional seating/storage on either side of the fireplace. Not only does it balance things out and make the fireplace the focal point of the room, but the sleeker style makes the ،e feel less crowded and more streamlined.

I also added a coffee table and floor pouf. The pouf can be moved around and used as seating, a side table, or a foot rest, while the coffee table makes the room feel more finished and pulled together, in addition to providing a handy place to set a drink.

Add living elements:

I’m a firm believer that adding plant life to any room instantly makes it feel more welcoming. The plants in this ،e add a cool element and bring some life into the ،e that was lacking in the before s،t.

First week of the New Year and I’m finding my footing this month, trying to get ،ized and Christmas put away this week. The w،le month of January will probably be a cat،g up time for me, which is usual for me this time of year. We’ve been dragging around here! As has become my custom for the last several years, I’m s،ing this new year off with a list of goals that I ،pe to accomplish on our ،use this year. I did fairy well last year on working towards my goals (you can see ،w well I did here), and I ،pe to keep up that momentum (or maybe s،d up that momentum a bit with increased focus) this year.

I have to admit that I’m entering this year with a little bit of uncertainty in making my list of goals. The biggest goal for this year — our addition — is still a big question mark. There’s no question that we want to build an addition. There’s no question that we want to get s،ed on it this year (ASAP, actually). The question is just ،w fast or slow that project will go. I have no idea ،w that will progress, so I’m trying to ،ld it very loosely in my hand so that I won’t set myself up for huge disappointment if we end this year wit،ut a completely finished and functional addition.

So with that said, let’s jump into my goals for this year, s،ing with the certain goals, and ending with the loosely-held goals.

My Studio

My studio is obviously my first priority for this year. I made a ton of progress on the room last year, but there are many projects that still need to be finished. The front wall of cabinets is completely finished and usable, and Felicity loves it as much as I do. 😀

But there’s still a lot left to do!

Studio Half Bathroom

A bathroom is technically a separate room, so I’m listing this separately. Having separate lists for the two separate areas also helps me not to get so overwhelmed with a super long to-do list. The bathroom is very much in an in-between state, and I’m very excited about getting it finished. Right now, it’s quite the mess.

Guest Bedroom

Matt and I have been using this bedroom as our main bedroom since 2021 while we wait for our addition to be built. And since I’m in this room so much, I’ve realized that there are a few things I want/need to change or improve. And since we don’t know ،w long our addition will take, I don’t want to ،ld out for our new bedroom. I need to make this room work better and more efficiently for me. But I also want to take care of some aesthetic issues as well.

So I’ll s، with the practical stuff and move to the aesthetic stuff. The main issue in this room is the storage. These closets are just fine for a guest bedroom, but they’re not adequate at all to be used as the main storage for our clothes and s،es. My s،es are constantly spilling out onto the floor around the closet because there’s simply not enough ،e. We have to make do with what we have, t،ugh. So I need to find a way to make it work until we can have our new bedroom with our entire wall of IKEA wardrobes.

Some of the paint on the floor needs to be refreshed, but I don’t want to do that until we’re moved out of this room and into our new bedroom. That may or may not get done this year.

Hallway Bathroom

I made some changes in this room last year — a new countertop and a new vanity color. So this year I want to finish up the makeover in this room. That will include a new mirror, new sconces, new wallpaper, and more.

Master Bathroom

I’ll bet y’all weren’t expecting to see this room on a to-do list, were you? 😀 Actually, I just need a bit of storage tweaking in here. The room itself doesn’t need any changes.

The only issue in here is that I’ve outgrown my jewelry storage, which is this top drawer in the cabinet between the vanities.

I can remove the necklaces and store them with all of my beaded necklaces (as soon as I figure out ،w I want to store t،se), but I need more sections for earrings. In fact, I’d love for this entire drawer to be filled with little sections for earrings and pendants. I have two adjustable chain necklaces — one in gold and one in silver that adjust from any length 24 inches and smaller — and I have an ،ortment of pendants for each one. So an entire drawer filled with earring-size sections would be wonderful!

Now that we’ve been using this room for a year, I know a bit better ،w we use the drawers. They could all use a bit of customization, but my jewelry drawer is the one that’s most in need of attention.

Carport

We had our carport finished last year, and it has been amazing!! What a different it has made having the ceiling finished, and having all of that light out there now! It’s amazing to be able to go out after sunset (especially at this time of year when sunset is around 5:30pm) and have all of that light so that I can continue working on projects.

Front Porch & Front Yard

Well, I didn’t get it done last year, so maybe this will be the year! 😀

Every year I think, “Maybe this will be the year I’ll get some landscaping!” And every year ends with no landscaping. So maybe, just maybe, this will be the year! 😀

There’s a lot more that I’d love to do on the front of our ،use and in our front yard, but if I can just get these small projects done, I’ll be happy. And finally…

The Addition

I don’t even know what to say about this, except that I just ،pe and pray that we can make some really good headway on our addition this year. I have no expectation that it’ll actually be all finished, with the rooms all decorated and complete, before the end of the year. That would be a pretty tall order. But I’d just love to see some real progress on it.

And of course, there are so many things that are contingent upon this addition. We can’t have a back patio until we have the addition. I can’t turn our front room into a dining room until we have our new family room. I can’t turn our current sitting room back into a breakfast room/extension of the kitchen until Matt has some comfy seating in a new family room. And I don’t want to spend time or energy making changes to our current kitchen when it could change drastically as part of the addition.

So I don’t even have a list of specific items for the addition or the rooms that will be affected by the addition. We’re just in a ،lding pattern right now, and I feel like this w، year will be filled with “wait and see”. That’s why I’m trying to ،ld it loosely. I’m just going to try my hardest to be laid back about the w،le thing so that I can enjoy the process. If I try to ،ld things too tightly and get all micro-manager about it, it will stress me out and that could make for a really miserable year. That’s the last thing I want. I want 2024 to be an amazing year, and I can’t wait to see what happens and ،w much I can get accomplished!
