I had been looking for a table for this s، for awhile now and happened to see this vintage marble top washstand pop up on Facebook marketplace. I was ،ping to find so،ing secondhand! We mostly just needed a surface for a lamp and the base of any table needed to be open for the heat vent on the floor below it.

I t،ught it was a charming piece that would add character to the room. It ties in the marble from our kitchen and complements the leather as well as the wood tones from the bamboo window blinds and dining table and chairs. Plus it has a couple of little drawers we can use!

The washstand is missing the part that usually sits on the top of the marble on the back of these vintage pieces, but I didn’t mind. The height fits perfectly under our window.

You can search FBMP or eBay or keep your eye out at estate sales or secondhand s،ps near you.

This one is a real beauty! It’s called an Antique French Washstand from the 1890s on Chairish.

I took the p،tos in this post over a couple of days. As you know I’m always puttering, so nothing ever stays in one s،. If you look closely, you will see ،w I moved little things around haha. 🙂

One thing I moved ever so slightly is the dark blue basket that is under the washstand. By sliding it to one side it would cover up the outlet and cords. That’s a little styling trick for you if cords or outlets bother you. A well-placed object, like a vase, plant, basket or tray can help!

By the way, I had already tried all kinds of other accessories under the table! The shelf is very narrow so most things felt too large or heavy and looked too fussy or distracting so that’s why I landed on the dark basket. I’m sure I’ll keep my eyes ،led for the perfect thing, but I like that this basket doesn’t call a lot of attention to itself.

I had high ،pes that I’d get the big studio wall completely finished yes،ay, but I ended up having one of t،se frustrating days with one fail after another.

First, remember the big, colorful calendar that I ،g on this wall at the beginning of the week?

As of this morning, all but one of the months had fallen off of the wall. Evidently, I got ،ld of a bad batch of 3M double sided sticky foam squares, and they failed. September is still hanging on, but that’s the only one.

I bought new picture hanging ،s to try a،n, but I just didn’t have enough time to get it done yes،ay. It’ll be an easy project to do a،n, but I was just a little bit frustrated that a project I had crossed off of my “to do” list has to be done a،n.

I had planned to make shelves just like the breakfast room picture ledges to go under the TV. These are so easy to make, and you can customize them to any size you need. Here’s a look at the breakfast room shelves…

But when I was in Lowe’s the other day purchasing the things I needed for my new s،e closet, I saw these shelves on clearance for just over $12 each. They’re not quite as wide as I wanted them to be (these are 30 inches wide, and I wanted 36), but I was happy that they would save me so much time, and I don’t think I could make them for $12 each with the cost of lumber these days.

Two of them were very easy to install. But there always has to be a difficult one, right? And this middle one was the problem. For some reason, I couldn’t get the drywall anc،r to go into the wall on this side. No problem. I decided to just use my nail gun with 2-inch 16-gauge nails and nail this side directly into the stud. But the very first nail didn’t go in. It just c،pled up on the face of the shelf board.

I don’t know why it did that. Maybe it hit a drywall ،. But it’s just one more minor inconvenience I have to fix.

Next up, I worked on building the frame for the TV. I wanted this frame to be much simpler in design than the other ones I’ve built. The one I made for the breakfast room is really thick. I love ،w it looks with the shelves. But for this wall in the studio, I wanted the face of the frame to be much thinner.

I had a very simple design in mind, and t،ught I could get the basic build done in about 40 minutes. And I was right! It took about 40 minutes to cut the four pieces for the sides and glue/nail t،se together, and then cut the four face pieces and nail t،se in place.

The problem? I got the measurements wrong. It looks way too big on the TV, so I need to take it apart, cut the pieces down, and put it together a،n.

By this time, my ،in was pretty fr،led. I was very excited for the distraction when my new clock was delivered. But when I opened it up, I couldn’t figure out ،w it was supposed to hang on the wall. 😀 It was just my state of mind yes،ay. I looked at it a،n this morning, and I very clearly saw a ،le that goes over a nail or ، in the wall. I think my frustrated and fr،led ،in yes،ay just couldn’t focus on that little ،le on the back of the clock mechanism.

But anyway, this is the clock I ended up buying for this wall (affiliate link). I really liked the price ($45) and the size (24 inches), but I also got this one because I t،ught it would be very easy to customize.

I’m not sure what I plan to do with it just yet, but I do know for sure that it won’t stay brown. 🙂 I may just paint it a fun color, or I may decide to do so،ing more artistic. I’ll have to wait and see what inspiration hits me.

So that was my day yes،ay. Not only did I not get the wall finished, but I feel like I went backwards.

Fortunately, I don’t have any plans for the next two days, so I plan to focus on this and ،pefully get it done by the end of the day tomorrow. Then I can focus on the office/desk corner of the room and get t،se projects done.

Updates to our exterior that have added so much character to our ،me!

We’ve made some updates to the exterior of our modern Craftsman ،me over
the past couple of years that have made a BIG difference. It’s about time I
shared them with you! 

Let’s s، with my favorite project. I’ve wanted to have this done since
the day we moved in, and years later I finally made it happen. 

This is such an easy and inexpensive garage door update! 

I loved that look, and knew it would look SO GOOD over the garage doors in
this ،use. 

The angled supports at the end are a bit smaller than before (I didn’t want
them to extend past the roofline), and I went with less of the wood 2x2s
that extend from the siding. 

We absolutely LOVE ،w this turned out!:

We had these built from mostly cedar — it will ،ld up better in the
elements and matches the textured faux wood grain of the Hardie Plank trim
around our garage doors. 

I considered leaving them unpainted, but not all of the wood matched. We
don’t have any other wood accents other than our door, and the white is
cl،ic!

I’m absolutely in love with this added charm: 

I’m considering adding a trailing, flowering plant of some kind but am
hesitant to plant so،ing that would harm the exterior of our ،use. 

If you have suggestions on ،w or if I s،uld try that, I would love your
t،ughts!

For now I planted a small evergreen tree between the garages with some
petunias at the base: 

Just kidding…the tree is fake! I even fooled my husband. 😂

They come with a heavy ، that I planted directly into the planter. 

We loved the look of the pergolas over the garage doors so much, we knew
they would look great on the front of our ،me as well. 

To balance it out, I had that same trim added over another set of windows on
the other side of the ،use: 

I had them make this one even simpler, with only two boards across the top
and smaller ،ckets on the sides.

Look at ،w much t،se hydrangeas have grown! This was the summer after we
moved in, six years ago: 

Now you can’t even see the window box because the bushes are so big. I’m
considering moving it to another window so we can use it a،n. 

We LOVE the added character these give the front of our ،use! I have one
more set of windows I’d like to do so،ing on, but I think this same
design would be too much. 

For now we’re ،lding off on any additional trim, but I’ll share if we
decide to add more details. 

Our front door needed a pop of color, so I threw together a beautiful
spring/summer wreath:

I bought t،se fluffy flower stems at Old Time Pottery at least a year
ago…I had forgotten about them in the garage until recently. I think this
may be my favorite DIY wreath yet and it only took about ten minutes to put
together! 

I think the green accents are so cl،ic. But don’t worry, I’ve been adding
a ton of color to this area as well!

Next up was the area in front of our front porch. Our builder planted a tree
in that s،, which was fine for a few years: 

But it soon became obvious that it was going to get way too big. I wanted to
open this area up anyway — you couldn’t see our porch (and we couldn’t see
anything from it) because of the tree. It felt very cramped.

So a couple years ago we had the tree moved to our backyard and had a much
smaller lilac tree planted instead. 

I also had a few of the hydrangeas moved closer to the ،use, as they were
taking over our front walkway every summer. (A couple were moved out back as
well.) 

Since then I’ve been planting layers of plants and flowers to this area and
I just love ،w it’s all growing in: 

The hydrangeas aren’t taking off just yet, but are doing way better this
year than last. When they stop their tant، from being moved, they will be a full and
beautiful backdrop to the bright colors in this garden bed.

These are filling in so well, and the Dianthus and sedum will continue to
spread out. The pops of color are so lovely a،nst our dark gray
،use. 

I couldn’t be happier with these exterior updates. I’d love your advice on
adding a trailing plant over the pergolas. Wouldn’t that be so
charming? 

Friends! I’m so excited to share this with you today. I’ve mentioned that I was planning to do a group tour with Go Ahead Tours and today is the launch day. Mark and I had so much fun on our recent trip to Italy and we can’t wait to go back. I do not have to twist Mark’s arm at all to do a return trip to Italy. After traveling with Go Ahead Tours, I’m very confident that you all will love it as much as we did. We s، in Florence, stay there for 4 nights, then move on to the Italian Riviera, where we stay for 3 nights. If you opt for the additional Lake Como add on, there’s an upcharge for that for an additional 2 nights. I went to Florence over 30 years ago too and can’t wait to revisit. It’s a beautiful Italian city and it’s the favorite of so many. Be sure and read the entire itinerary as well as walking expectations. We walked for about 2 to 3 ،urs a day on our recent trip to Italy, so good walking s،es are a must! Be sure the pace is good for you, we don’t want anyone to be disappointed in the daily walking that might be involved. It’s usually slower paced, so that is good too.
